Bead Museum in Glendale, AZ

This was posted on the Bead & Button forum by Russ Nobbs of Rings and Things. I thought it was important to pass along...

The Bead Museum in Glendale AZ needs help.

A period without an acting director left the Bead Museum without grant writing and fund raising for the current year. The economy has taken its toll. Jamey Allen, Alice Sheer and others are working to raise funds and ask for our help. Rings & Things, and other bead sellers are contributing. Here are excerpts from letters and posts about the fund raising campaign.

The Bead Museum of Arizona is the original bead museum begun by Gabrielle and Ted Liese in the mid-1980s. With the closing of the smaller Bead Museum in DC and the much earlier closing of the Museum of Native American Cultures in Spokane, The Bead Museum of Arizona is the primary bead centered museum in North America. (The Picard Trade Bead Museum and African Art Gallery in Carmel, CA is the only other.)

If there are angels who could pledge large sums toward the effort to preserve the Museum and its collections intact, please contact Alice Scherer at alice @ europa.com or call her at 503-655-3078 (Oregon). Or if you are more comfortable, by all means contact the acting Director of the Bead Museum, Kelly Norton, at director @ beadmuseumaz.org Or, simply go to http://www.beadmuseumaz.org/ , find the Donate button on the left, click on it and follow the PayPal prompts from there. 1800 individuals with $100 donations and 20 who can give $1000 may be more realistic but we'll be glad to accept all donations!
In the meantime, if you are not currently a member of the Bead Museum, please join. The cost for an individual member is $40 and here is the web address: http://www.beadmuseumaz.org/membership.htm

The Bead Museum of Arizona museum is the repository for :
** the collections of Peter Francis Jr. (The Center for Bead Research), including a many hundreds of bead sample cards collection;
** the vast majority of the artifacts collection of the Center for the Study of Beadwork, including what may well be the largest collection of bead looms in the world, as well as nearly 100 bead sample cards, and a slide bank of thousands of slides of the work of contemporary beadworkers from the United States, Europe and Asia in the period around the late 1980s and ‘90s (pre-The New Beadwork);
** an extensive collection of beads, necklaces and relevant artifacts from Asian, African , Latin American and European sites donated by the Lieses, Lois Dubin and other long-time collectors;
** a collection of the work of contemporary glass bead makers starting with those of the early period in the 1980's and '90's who exhibited in the ground-breaking 1993 exhibit at the Bead Museum, and, by no means the least;
** the Library: several thousand books and periodicals originally started as a private Art Library and grown to a valuable Research Library about the history of personal adornment, which includes important information on the history of glass.

Also included in the collections are archived letters and papers of
* Elizabeth Harris
* Peter Francis, Jr.
* Lady Gloria Dale
* Albert Summerfield, and
* Michael Heide, among many others.

Main Line Bead Society

"Whoever said winning isn't everything, never had to fight Cancer."

I love to come across the good works of my fellow beaders. We are such a giving community. Soft Flex Company just donated wire to the "Beaded Warrior Project". This is a community outreach project specifically designed to create public awareness and remind women and men currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer that they are not alone and surely not forgotten in their battle back to wellness. You can donate too!

Breast Cancer 3day 2008 Results

Aren't they cute? They were waiting patiently for their mom to walk by.

Today, I was happy to read the final results are in from the Breast Cancer 3day 2008. As you may or may not know, I walked 60 miles with my mom, my aunt and my friend in San Diego, CA.

Investment in mission program and services for 2008 = $79,837,095

My aunt was brave and signed up again for 2009. If you'd like to donate, please visit her donation page. It is a wonderful cause.

Web meeting at Inside the Bungalow

Being that I work at home, I always look forward to meeting up with our web graphic designer and pow-wowing on the maintenance of our ever growing website. Besides being a pretty darn wonderful co-worker, Kristen is an even better friend. We usually choose a coffee house somewhere between our two homes and meet about every few months. Today we met at a very charming little coffee house/yoga studio in downtown Mesa, AZ called Inside the Bungalow. The patio was gorgeous and we had a lovely chicken waldorf salad sandwich. It was very yummy. I was happy that it was so quiet. We were able to talk and hear each other easily. I think this place might just be our east valley keeper. Very cute! :)

Sneak peak at April book review

Beadwork Inspired by Art: Impressionist Jewelry and Accessories (Beading Works of Art) Beadwork Inspired by Art: Impressionist Jewelry and Accessories by Judith Durant

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
Beadwork Inspired by Art: Impressionist jewelry and accessories: by Jean Campbell & Judith Durant is a beautiful work of art all in itself. What a neat idea? “Inspired by the great masterpieces of fine artists – and working with a vast array of beads and numerous techniques from stringing to weaving – beadworkers can produce their own works of art.” Jean & Judith constructed 12 designs that were influenced by their favorite impressionist masterpieces. “Impressionism is the name given to an art movement that began in Paris in the 1860s. Paintings in this style are known for their loose strokes of color, which are applied side by side. The brushstrokes-short, choppy, broad, or sometimes a series of dots-created and ‘impression’ and left the color mixing to the eye of the beholder.” This book is absolutely marvelous.

From the back cover: “You’ll find a photograph of the piece of art that inspired each project and detailed step-by-step instructions and illustrations for beading it, too. Make all twelve, and soon you’ll be designing your own works of art!”

Works of art include paintings by, but are not limited to:
  • Vincent Van Gogh
  • Edgar Degas
  • Edouard Manet
  • Paul Gauguin
  • Pierre Auguste Renoir

You can find this book on amazon.com.

Art Bead Scene Reviews Soft Flex Trios

It was really nice to read today on Art Bead Scene about the Trios! "Looks inspiring!" They sure are. I've said it a million times before, but I'll say it again. In such a colorful craft, why not use a colorful wire? In a painting, the base background color is just as important as all of the colors that fill in the picture on top. Using a colored wire at your base has allowed for you to design in ways that you never even dreamed possible. Thanks for spreading the word Heather Powers!

Soft Flex Company is really happy to carry the broadest color assortment. And, all wire packaged in the Trios is made right here in the USA. Every inch of the Soft Flex Wire is hand spooled on a spooling machine. We touch every inch! Our professional spoolers can feel the slightest change in the wire...a deviation in the nylon, a deviation in the diameter, etc. In fact, pick up a spool of our wire and a spool of any competitor's wire and compare the lay out of the wire on the spool. You'll see that ours is spooled to perfection. This allows for less curl and less damage to the wire as you take it off the spool for your designs. Just another way that we make quality count.

Waste Not Want Not Bracelet

I created this design at CHA. Yes, yes, yes...it took me 2 months to get the instructions online in the Soft Flex free project ideas. I'm a busy girl these days. For this project, I used my scraps that I had left over from several Trios to create fun bracelets that fit over the top of your hand. I was inspired by Jamie Hogsett's Tranquilty Necklace. Thanks for the inspiration, Jamie.

Project Instructions

See what my friends are up to this week:

Jamie Hogsett learned a new beading stitch: African Helix.

Kristen Fagan celebrated St. Patrick's Day by baking her great-grandmother's delicious Irish Soda Bread.

Not that Martha Stewart is a close and personal friend, I'd like to mention that she has a good show coming up on Monday, 3/23. The Yarn Show, knit and crochet fashion show, the perfect yarn basket, and inventive creations. You know me, I just can't get enough of knitting lately!

It's All About Fashion

I enjoyed this blog about staying hip and in style during an economic down turn using diy tactics or shopping for similar items minus the label and the cost. A girl has to do what a girl has to do. :)

Tiger-tail is thin nylon-coated steel cable. It is strong, durable, and rigid. However it can kink, so be careful. Soft-flex can be used and is similar but much softer and less prone to kinking. Decide how much space you want between the beads, 2 inch spaces between each threaded bead is very fetching. Necklace can be long or short, personal preference prevails.

Convergence at the Bead & Button Show

Every year Soft Flex Company sponsors an exhibit to be shown at the front entrance of the Bead & Button Show. We are always happy to support our friends at ISGB (International Society of Glass Beadmakers).

"Convergence" pairs ISGB members with International jewelry designers focusing on the four elements of water, air, earth, and fire. The mission in creating this opportunity and challenge for artists to come together in creativity and design was to showcase how handmade glass beads can be incorporated into exhibition-quality jewelry.

I look forward to seeing this wonderful exhibit, and I hope you do too! Learn more about the exhibit by clicking here.

Congratulations Cover Girl

Congratulations to Jamie Hogsett (Soft Flex Education Coordinator) and April/May Cover Girl Designer for Beadwork Magazine. I had the pleasure of spending time with Jamie on the night that she heard her design was chosen for the cover and it was wonderful to see the glow and happiness that she was exuding! She deserves it. This design is awesome!!!! I received my copy in the mail yesterday and couldn't help but smile.

See what my friends are up to:

Jamie Hogsett's affair with the knitting spool continues.

Kristen Fagan channeled her desire to be at the Phish reunion shows last weekend with a painting inspired by her favorite band.

And I just loved this blog entry from Vickie Howell about "sustainable sandwich wraps". Very cute! I've never met Vickie so she isn't really "my friend", but I thought I'd share this link too. She has some really great ideas on her website.

Santa Fe Beadfest THIS WEEKEND!

We thought this day may never come again. Santa Fe is finally ready to have a bead show AGAIN! It has been years since Bead Expo last was able to call Santa Fe its home. Bead Expo has gone through many changes since and is now actually called Beadfest! Regardless of name, this show is sure to please. Above is a photo from our last show in Santa Fe. Thomas is still working with us and will be there again this weekend. Dan has moved on to new horizons, but I think I can agree with all of my current and former co-workers that Santa Fe is a great place to visit, great food, great energy and a whole lot of fun. Sadly, I will not be there. I chose to stay home and get caught up. All of the other wonderful Soft Flex'ers will have to entertain you. Jamie Hogsett will be manning (womanning?) a demo table. So definitely stop by and check her out!

Old designs bring fresh inspiration

Years ago, when I was a young and sprite at age 20 (1999) I started working for Soft Flex. Mike & Scott had already accumulated a lot of unique designs using our wire by that time. I was like a kid in a candy store, soaking up beading information. There was one design that was especially interesting to me. It was an African Helix design. I decided that I wanted to mimic it but use brighter colored beads. It was my first bead weaving project. I recently pulled it out of the back of my jewelry and brought it to a few shows for show and tell. It caught so much attention that we decided to put it on our website as a free project idea. The lovely and talented Jamie Hogsett wrote up some instructions.

The Gem Project

My jewelry making meetup is currently working with a new cause called The Gem Project.

The GEM Project is facilitated by trained Motivational Interviewers that lead discussions & provide other managerial/organizational services. The group is facilitated by a Motivational Interviewer for a total of twelve-weeks, and then the group transforms into a mutual support group that is fully organized and managed by its members & volunteers. The group is free of charge and The GEM Project provides all the necessary tools & supplies. The groups join together one time per week for a minimum of three hours; the first half is dedicated to discussing the topic of the day and the second half is for the vocational jewelry training. The size of the group is limited to 12 participants to fully allow conversational interaction. The groups also have the opportunity to interact with other GEM groups through journaling, newsletters & blogs. The GEM Project participants learn from one another and grow together by sharing their own personal life experiences and listening to and accepting others’ experiences. Unlike traditional support groups, The GEM Project is a solution-focused empowerment group; instead of focusing energy on the challenge, we focus energy only on solutions and positive ways of overcoming challenges in life.

The Phoenix group is working toward empowering homeless women. This teaches them skills in jewelry making as well as gives them the ability to make a network of friends in a similar situation with the tools to be positive and lift each other up and out of their circumstances.

Josh & I love Charlie Rose

Here is a great interview with Eric Schmidt, CEO of google.

March sale

If you didn't notice, crimps are on sale this month. Crimps are one of those basic needs that you just can't live without and if you ask me, I can never seem to have enough. So now is a good time to stock up. Our crimps have double the wall thickness of most crimps. They are also completely seamless. It makes a huge difference to crimp with a good quality crimp! HUGE!

Long weekend in Montana

Josh & I are going to fly home to Montana with my aunt and cousin for a long weekend in Montana. I grew up in Montana and still have a lot of family in the area, including my Mom. Unfortunately, I always have technical difficulties with my phone and little to no internet connection. So you probably won't hear from me for the next few days. I'll be back on Monday and better than ever. I'm looking forward to some scrabble, hot cocoa, mom hugs, snow, sweaters and wintery fun. Then us Arizonans will fly back to our lovely 80 degree weather.

Gossip, gossip, who's got the good gossip....

I normally don't like gossip, but there is no better gossip then what you find over at Craft Gossip in the jewelry making category! It was great to see a long and thorough post on Craft Gossip about the new Extreme Wire and the fun, colorful Trios only from your favorite beading wire manufacturer, Soft Flex Company. YAY gossip! :)

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is evaluating Wi-Fi internet access onboard four aircraft now through March. With this innovation, we are giving Customers with Wi-Fi enabled devices the freedom to be more productive and to stay entertained while they fly with full access to the Internet, including e-mail, music, shopping, and virtual private networks (VPN).

Why didn't all of the airlines do this a LONG time ago? Being a frequent traveler, I can attest that the airline industry tends to rate very low on my customer friendly radar. For instance, when they realized that they needed to make more profit on each and every customer - why not add benefits and charge for them, such as wifi? Or make newspapers & magazines available for sale? Why charge for water, blankets and even toilet time - which have traditionally been free perks of flying for many years. Heck, I'd even choose one airline over another for free wi-fi, even if the ticket was a little bit more expensive.

Southwest Airlines is the one exception to this rule, in my book. They seem to be forward thinking. They keep their prices down but not by ignoring the customer's wants and needs.

Jamie's latest book!

Create Jewelry: Glass: Brilliant Designs to Make and Wear (Create Jewelry series) Create Jewelry: Glass: Brilliant Designs to Make and Wear by Marlene Blessing & Jamie Hogsett

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
Create Jewelry: Glass by Marlene Blessing and Jamie Hogsett rounds out a 4 part book series that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I fancy myself to have a pretty good eye when it comes to glass, having spent the past 10 years in the beading glass community. Mike & Scott really got their start through local bead stores as well as through many loyal and loving lampwork artists that have used our products to string their beads for many years. Most glass artists love our .024/Heavy diameter wire because they can feel secure that their beads, once strung, will not break, dropping their bead to crack or break. Marlene & Jamie used many different types of glass, from seed beads all the way to fancy handmade lampwork beads. Jamie has some really fascinating and absolutely beautiful designs in this book.

From the back cover: "Jewelry making and beaders love working with glass beads for their versatility, affordability, and ability to be used in a combination of techniques. From tiny seed beads to eye-catching focal beads, glass takes many forms - clear, transparent, opaque, vibrantly colored, shiny, or matte. From sassy, elegant, dressy, or flirty, Create Jewelry: Glass presents timeless, glamorous projects incorporating glass beads in every form."

Inside learn to:
  • 20+ beautiful and innovative designs
  • Techniques including stringing and wireworking
  • Intriguing anecdotes, history, and tips about glass beads
