Open to Possibilities by Kristen Fagan

My jump from creating for fun to creating with my freelance business in mind was an organic one; by keeping my mind open to possibilities my journey has meandered and taken routes I would never have dreamed of. Whether you're a small business, designer or making personal changes in your life, here are some tips to keep yourself open to possibilities and uncover hidden opportunities along the way.

Keep an open mind. New things aren't always easy but, don't let a closed mind hold you back. When your mind is closed, you are not living up to your full potential. When an opportunity comes my way I try to respond with "yes, let me think it over and get back to you."   By saying yes, you are in control of whether you want to seize the opportunity, you can rationally look at the pros and cons, discuss the details with someone you trust and make an informed decision.  It's okay to say no once you thought it through but, being open from the start puts you in control.

Ask questions. In a new situation you'll have a lot of questions. When you find yourself wondering why or what or when, ask. It will put your mind at ease and the task much less intimidating.

Learn every day and share what you've learned.  Learning to reflect on what has happened allows you to react and plan based on the new knowledge and perspective you've gained. Go back over your planner, appointment book or emails regularly. Share what you learn with others. If you pick up a good idea, pass it along. If you're reading a good book, recommend it. Share your ideas, your experiences, and your knowledge. Everyone wins when you share. When you are willing to share you will see that others are eager to do the same for you.

Be friendly to everyone. As much as I love to keep things positive, I'm not always Mrs. Positivity, especially when I'm overwhelmed or lacking confidence. By simply keeping a friendly attitude, you will put everyone within a situation at ease. One of the best things you can do for yourself (and the situation) is have a good attitude. Yes, this is cliche, but it's so very true!

Determine your goals for today, tomorrow and someday. If you have goals and purpose, you'll have a big picture to focus on. Once you establish what you want out of a situation, you'll be much happier to be in it.  Sara mentioned this in one of her posts recently but, we have always kept a running “to do list” for Soft Flex Company that contains immediate tasks, future tasks and big ideas for someday.  Even if something may seem like a mammoth task today, one day it may be do-able. Those someday goals are part of keeping an open mind.  If we put it out there that we want to do something someday there is a better chance when the opportunity presents itself we'll go for it.

Starting something new can be intimidating but, no matter how intimidating a situation is, know that you are stronger then you would have ever imagined. By keeping your mind open and your attitude positive it will make your journey more enjoyable, bring about positive change and keep you open to possibilities.
