Spotlight on...Book "Waking up in the Land of Glitter" by Cathy Kano-Murillo

Book: Waking up in the Land of Glitter
by Kathy Cano-Murillo

Waking up in the Land of Glitter by Kathy Cano-Murillo is not the typical type of book that I review for the Soft Flex School of Design, so it was neat to read somethign a little different that still applies to the craft industry. Kathy (also known as Crafty Chica) is a well known author of several craft titles. This book is her debut work of fiction. The characters were very cute and super crafty, as you would expect from a craft diva. I have a feeling that any girl or guy that has found themselves up at 2am with a hot glue gun and glitter would find this book right up their alley. I know you are out there and I know that there are lots of you because I see you at CHA twice year!

Announcing Free Make-It-Take-It Projects at the Bead and Button Show

Free project idea by Jamie Hogsett

At the 2010 Bead and Button Show, Jamie and I will be swapping back and forth between our demo table and the Free Make-It-Take-It table.  MITI's are a great way to get some hands on experience with a product, in this case, colored beading wire.  The beads will vary from those show above.  In fact, our very own trade show manager Jenny Wilson fired up her torch and made lampwork beads specifically for these kits.  So each MITI will include at least 2 handmade beads.  Neat, huh!

MITI table
6pm-8pm Thursday
12pm-4pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
(while supplies last - first come, first served)

Demo table
Open all hours of the show.
Come ask questions and learn basic beading techniques from either Jamie or I.
There will be tons of design examples and ideas.

To learn more about the upcoming show, check out their latest show newsletter.

Spotlight on.... "Organize your Color for Better Color Choices" by Margie Deeb

"Organize your Color for Better Color Choices" by Margie Deeb

The definition of being organized is that you know exactly where you can find what you are looking for. For the most part, I am, even though it might not be apparent to one who walks in my studio. Other than tax documents, the most organized area of my life is color.

I organize my colors with chromatic meticulousness in every medium I work in (beads, colored pencils, oils, acrylic, pastels, markers... the list goes on). I do this not only because I thoroughly enjoy it and it allows me to understand the hues in relation to other hues, but also because it allows me the freedom to make stronger color choices more easily.

Think BIG!

Mike Sherman and Scott Clark
Fashion Institute of Technology - New York City, NY

So often in life, we are told that we can't do things.  The sky is not the limit and we need to settle on what is truly possible and stop living in fantasy land. I've been very fortunate to work for two gentlemen that just do not think in those terms.  Mike and Scott have always encouraged us to think BIG.  My team (I supervise 6 staff members) and I not only have a list of goals for this week, this month and this year but most of us have an ongoing "someday" list.  The "someday" list is sometimes full of things that seem totally impossible, big dreams and creative ideas that we don't have the time, energy or resources to tackle in the immediate future. But, what I have learned over the years is that by having items on a "someday" list, I'm more likely to spot an opportunity to make them happen then if I ignored the idea because it seemed to grandiose or too difficult.  By having that list, I can remind myself to shoot for the stars. While I'm on the subject, I would like to thank both Scott and Mike for always pushing us to want more, to not settle and to forget complacency altogether.  They both continuously inspire me and the entire Soft Flex family with their endless drive and limitless creativity.

Let me give you an example.  When we first decided to host our own show in New York City, I was given the extreme privilege to scout out a location for the show.  Would you believe that I actually toured Madison Square Garden as a possible contender for our little bead show?  Do you know why?  Because it might have worked, and it may still work someday.  We settled into a very nice hotel instead, but that doesn't mean that we didn't think BIG when we explored our options.  Now, we're about to celebrate our 5th anniversary of this show in October 2010 and it is located at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) which is practically as well known as Madison Square Garden but a better fit for our type of show.  The sky really is the limit, but only if you let yourself see past the horizon.

So the moral of the story is - THINK BIG!  Don't limit yourself to what is possible.  Always, always, always think BIGGER than what is possible.  Sometimes this will mean working outside of your comfort zone.  Sometimes it will mean learning all about something brand new and that might feel intimidating.  Sometimes you'll fall flat on your caboose and have to start all over again.  But if you challenge yourself to dream BIG, you'll be able to accomplish amazing things and open doors that you never knew existed.

How do you organize your goals?  Do you have short term, long term and someday goals too?

Bead Society of Northern California Bead Bazaar - recap

Gallery Manager KimE helping customers at the show

The BSNC one day bead bazaar (traditionally held each May) is a fabulous show. It is run by a dedicated volunteer staff and it always has a wonderful mix of vendors (heavy on the one-of-a-kind artisans).

I will admit, for Soft Flex, this show is a rough one! Why? Well, since it is only one day, what normally is spread over several days at most shows all happens during the single day.

5:30am - workers from Sonoma start their drive to Oakland
6:30am - everyone meets to start unloading all the product for the show
7am - 10am - set-up for the show
10am - 5pm - show is open
5pm - 7pm - tear down the show and pack up for the drive home
7pm - 8pm - workers drive home to Sonoma

So it becomes a good 14 hour work day for just about all of us behind the booth. So our apologies if you happened to catch one of us ducking behind the registers to chomp on a sandwich! The bazaar is always a strong show so there is never a chance to get out of the booth for very long. Because of that - I was limited on the pics I could snap during the show...but here are a few, mostly from where I was behind our registers.

Now, I do have to say that this year's show will forever stick out in my mind for an entirely different reason - the size of our hotel rooms! Two of us fly in from out of state to help work the show, so we get rooms for the Friday and Saturday. In an effort to be frugal, I decided to try a new hotel with an incredibly good rate (this is where that expression "you get what you pay for" comes to mind...). It had good reveiws, and since it was just one person to each room - I could foresee no problems. I booked us each DOUBLE BED rooms.

Well, my friend Jiley (Jiley's Studio), who was also in the show, kindly offered to pick us up at the airport. I told her she could share my room for the Friday night as a thank you. I told her she could either bring an air mattress or take the 2nd bed in the room (I book a fair number of hotels each year...until now DOUBLE had always translated into 2 beds in the room....).

Bless Jiley's heart - she is a trooper....not only did she have to kill almost 4 hours in between picking up my co-worker Thomas and myself (thanks to weather and mechanical delays out of Albuquerque) - but then she got to walk into the 2nd smallest hotel room I have ever seen (I stayed in one that might have been a foot smaller many years ago in Rome- but it is almost a toss up).

my reaction realizing this was the entire room

notice how the air mattress just fits from the end of bed - bathroom door

Jiley maneuvering from her bed to mine (since there was no floor left for walking)

Jiley laughing (or crying) that we have to put the mattress up like a murphy bed to get into the bathroom

we had to move the desk into the bathroom to fit the mattress (bathroom was pretty big oddly enough...still wonder what the housekeeper thought?)

I have done so many shows that it really takes SOMETHING to make them stand out...but this one has earned it's own LITTLE spot in my heart. I did feel a little better after I heard guest after guest asking the front desk "where is the 2nd bed?" "we booked a double room". Be sure it reads double beds and not just double bed!

Beetle Bracelet by Jamie Hogsett

Whenever I have a beading emergency, my bead stash is there to save the day. I find that if I'm lacking inspiration, the stash is the perfect place to go for ideas. There are a lot of beads in my collection that I haven't seen in awhile, so just looking at them again is often just the spark I need for new ideas to form.

These ceramic beads from Earthenwood Studio are a great example. I've had them for a few years now and the little beetle's shades of blue and green caught my eye when I rediscovered it yesterday. I used one strand each of Soft Flex Beading Wire in Green Turquoise, Fluorite, Chrysoprase, and Peridot to string the ceramic beads with a mixture of Black Matte Opaque Delicas from Beyond Beadery and lots of CRYSTALLIZED Swarovski Elements from my stash, specifically 3mm and 4mm rounds and bicones in olivine, chrysolite satin, peridot, and light azore satin. A sterling silver toggle clasp with olivine Austrian crystals and 3mm sterling silver crimp tubes finish off the bracelet. All together, these elements compose a cute, summery bracelet with cool, watery colors. Like everything else of late, this bracelet makes me want to go to the beach!

Spotlight on...Designer Joy Masters

Featured designer: Joy Masters

I love shiny things, jewelry, chocolate, my dude (a.k.a husband), my family, my friends, chocolate, music, comedy, all things Celtic and once again, chocolate. Not necessarily in that order.

I believe jewelry has the power to transform your look, but also your mood. I first started designing after I got a job working in a corporate environment where I had to keep my clothing very simple and serious (frowny face).

Customer Service 101

When I started with Soft Flex Company, 11 years ago, I was a traveling sales rep.  Each week, we'd travel and set up a booth at a trade show, teach, demo, sell our products and then break down and head home again. Those first few years taught me a lot of about customer service. Not only did I learn about customer service within our booth, I learned a whole lot from the airlines, hotels, taxi drivers, restaurants and so on.  Here are a few helpful hints.

1. Empathize. Always put yourself in the customer's shoes. Try to see it from their point of view and feel what they are feeling.

2. Perspective.   Their unique perspective of the situation, product, encounter, etc is valid.  Also, you never know what happened 10 minutes, 10 hours or 10 days before your encounter with this person.  Their perspective of the same situation might be entirely different from yours due to past experience. That doesn't make you wrong, or them wrong, it just means you see things differently and that's okay.

2. Listen. Customer feedback is a valuable tool for learning about how you can service all of your customers better in the future.  Don't pass up on this opportunity by shutting them out and not listening.

3. Apologize. If you made an error, apologize.  People make mistakes and most people understand that they aren't perfect and you aren't perfect.  But, usually they will accept an apology and move forward with a fresh foot.

4. Returns and Exchanges.  Along with #3, people buy things and need to return or exchange them.  Again people make errors and that is normal.  Have a return and exchange policy that is flexible enough to work for your customers.  Here is our risk free return or exchange policy.

5.  Remain calm. No matter how upset someone may get, stay calm.  You can't control how someone else feels or reacts, but you can certainly control how you react.  Getting upset or arguing, doesn't solve any issues.

6. Smile.  Enjoy your job.  If you don't enjoy your job, maybe it is time for a career change.

From your experience, what else can you add to this list?

Spotlight on....Bead Seller Beadlush

Featured Bead Seller:  Beadlush

After a 15 year career with US Airways, and 10 years beading as a hobby, Lydia Stern dared to believe that she could turn her love of beads and jewelry making into a full time, successful business. In October of that year, she saw the realization of her dream as Beadlush opened its doors in a small retail space on Central Avenue in Charlotte, NC. Her first customers found a nice selection of natural and glass beads (many of which were directly from Lydia's own coveted bead collection!), some seed beads, some crystal, a general stock of sterling silver and gold-filled findings, and a proprietor who offered her skills and advice. Not bad for day one!
