CHA Summer Show

Twice a year, the Craft and Hobby Association hosts a show that brings people together from all walks of life that have one thing in common, we all work in the craft industry.  There are people who specialize in knitting, crocheting, sewing, jewelry making, etc.  It is a really neat event in that it gives people a chance to see what other parts of the industry are doing and an opportunity to cross-market.  Soft Flex is beading wire, but it can also be knitted or crocheted.  Scrapbook paper is specifically made for creating scrapbooks, but what about making paper beads?  See what I mean?

We were pleased to attend an event the night of set-up called "Taste of Rosemont". Quite a few of the local restaurants came to the convention center and set up a food tasting.  It was fabulous and gave all of us a chance to figure out where we wanted to eat for the week.  It was really a great treat after working hard all day to make our booth look just right. Jamie and I got to spend some time chatting with Jennifer Jangles.

We were selected as 1 of 20 companies to present our products at a media event on Tuesday morning before the show opened.  We demo'ed knitting our Extreme Flex Wire

It isn't very often that you find all girl Soft Flex'ers at a show, but this time it was 4 girls.  Shelley and Lisa work in our customer service dept.  If you ever call into our office, I'm sure you've probably spoken to them.

Each company at the media event had to give a 1 minute speech about their product.  I was in charge of the speaking portion and feel like I did pretty well. Listen to the Cool 2 Craft podcast and enjoy the entire innovations media event or ffw to minute 30 if you want to hear me talk about our innovation.

Knitting!

Right after the media event, the show opened.  Look at all of these cool crafty peeps waiting to get into the show!

Opening Ceremony!

Sandy Ghezzi CHA VP MME

Shelley teaching our make-it-take-its.  We offered the same make-it-take-it earrings as we showed at Bead and Button but using the green Renewal Trio.

Jamie and I are long time fans of Project Runway.  This year, designer Suede  from season 5 was at CHA in the Craftwell  booth.  We stopped by, said hi, took a look at his crafty gowns and got this photo using my fun new phone.  He was really, really, really nice.  We were both impressed.

Hands down, our favorite place to eat was right across from the convention center - Gibsons.  It was so yummy!  Although I never did have steak, look at the steak and lobster tray that they bring out to try to tempt you.  I only ate there twice, but I think that my co-workers got over there 4 times. So good!

And we were fortunate enough to be treated to a super size slice of cake from Gibsons by our friend Suzann from Beadphoria.  She brought us chocolate mousse cake and it was oh so yummy.  This is my quarter of the slice that she brought to us!  I don't know if you can really tell, but it  is HUGE!  It was a nice treat mid-day.  I think that this solidified our love for Gibsons.

Silver and Teal Necklace by Carolyn Jean - In the Studio with KnittingAmazon

In this design, Carolyn bead crocheted around Soft Flex Beading Wire. She was able to hide the clasp in the fringe.  The bead crochet looks so beautiful in this color scheme.  It is always so neat to see the different ways that designers use our wire in their unique designs.

Econoflex Cluster Earrings from the Bead Studio

I love these dreamy earrings.  Considering that they are made with Econoflex, they are pretty affordable too!  The Bead Studio, a bead shop in Ashland, Oregon, has been kind enough to share directions for these beauts on their website.  Also, they have a very busy page on facebook.

Spotlight on...The Peacock Shop

Our featured bead store for this month is The Peacock Shop

Raised by a family of Magpies, and having honed her shiny-finding skills as the Manager of Beadlush in Charlotte,NC, Megan Savors has amassed an impressive array of treasures over the years. When her she moved to Denver in 2007, she used her procured baubles to create limited edition and one of a kind jewelry and accessories for other magpies. Two years of fervent creation left barely a dent in her hoard....something had to be done. The Peacock Shop began in March 2009 as an Etsy store meant to be an outlet for Megan to share her collection of pretty things with the world. Over the next year, it grew from a desk in her bead room, to a seasonal kiosk, to its first shop front location, where it's becoming well-known for its unusual selection, and inspiring surroundings.

Awesome survey comments!

I love, love, love to read all of the nice feedback that we get on our surveys. Every once in awhile, I give myself a time limit and will grab as many nice comments as possible and then email them to the entire Soft Flex staff so that everyone can enjoy the great things that our customers say about us. Here is our latest list.

· I like the mixed gemstone strands, and the short strands... don't have to buy a ton of something for one project.

· I just put in an order and to my surprise everything was in stock, that always brings a smile to my face.

· Love your ads and design ideas in beading magazines (ie. Bead Style). They are the reason I checked out your website.

· I am relatively new and fairly inexperienced at beading and design, but your wire products are the only ones I use. I have found them to be the best quality.

· Love your very reliable and flexibly Soft Touch Beading Wire. I won't use anything else.

· Soft Flex wire is the only wire in the world that I trust when making my necklaces.

· Love your soft flex wire. It is the only brand I will use.

· Keep up the good work

· No - just that I have tried other beading wires and they don't compare. I ran out of Soft-flex the other day - tried to use another brand I had laying around - It was HORRIBLE! I was making a twisted beaded bracelet. I don't know how they can sell the stuff. Kinks and is not flexible at all. Sad I wasted my money trying to save a buck or 2.

· I love the wire product. Have always had good success when using Softflex.

· I am impressed by you growing selection and wealth of ideas.

· I had a question and sent to Sara. We wrote back and forth two times. She was very clear, honest, and I did not buy that product because of her answers. This kept me from being disappointed if I had ordered the pliers and crimps and they would not have been what I wanted. Made an increase in my loyalty.

· Softflex is the best wire I've found, and I've tried them all!

· Your customer service person, Lisa, was fabulous and very helpful

· Just keep up the great sales and I will be very, very happy.

· Not at this time, I'm really impressed with Soft Flex, the whole site is amazing and informative!

· I think it's wonderful that you offer this free project section!

· Your project ideas are spectacular! Most sophisticated I've seen on the internet. Instead of buying chain for my projects, I can save a bundle by adding beads to wire.

Spotlight on...Beadmaille by Cindy Thomas Pakopf

Our featured book this month isBeadmailleby Cindy Thomas Pankopf

Beadmaille by Cindy Thomas Pankopf. Weaving Soft Flex through metal links or jump rings to create a modern feeling jewelry design is a very appealing technique that I've been playing around with this past year. It was really neat to see the beadweaver's version. The illustrations in this book look as if they would be really clear and easy to understand. Although the design ideas may look complicated, it seemed like all of the projects were doable by a new beader.

Margie Deeb's Fall/Winter 2010 Color Report Available Now!

The Color report includes:

• Detailed palettes explaining how to combine this season's colors
• Creative inspiration for your all of your jewelry designs
• Forecast information designated by the individual PANTONE® Color #
• Suggested gemstones, Delica® and Swarovski Component colors
• Color swatches are referenced to the PANTONE for fashion and home color palette

As you all know, we LOVE Margie Deeb.  Her expertise in color has been a lovely addition to our monthly Spotlight On and I always look forward to her color reports. They are chalk full of great information. If you have followed along and enjoyed her monthly segment on our website, you'll really love the more elaborate and informational color report.

Our own Jamie Hogsett, Soft Flex Educational Coordinator, designed a necklace using a "Golden Glow" combination on Page 7.  I'm sure she'll share her design in an upcoming blog post.  It is quite nice.  Being that we have such a lovely gold beading wire, these color palettes really caught my eye.

I'm also a huge fan of the colors: purple orchid, lipstick red and living coral.  These sort of reminded me of the Mystical Trio, which is one of my favorites.  It's nice to see that Fall/Winter 2010 will be full of such luscious colors!

There is a FREE PREVIEW available if you would like to take a peak, but I'd say that it is best for you to just go ahead and ORDER THE REPORT.  It is totally worth it!

Logo Design by Kristen Fagan

It is said that one of the most challenging things in design is to create an effective company logo and I have to agree. Logos are one of the most important elements in a company’s public image. Everything related to your company such as your logo, product, and packaging, should send the same message about the personality and credibility of your company. This makes logo design one of the most difficult aspects of graphic design for any designer.

That said; I know most entrepreneurs are on a tight budget, so they usually make their own logos. If you decide to design your logo, here are some basics to remember:

Logos should capture the attention of your audience. Understand clearly what you intend to communicate. Design fails for lack of a clear purpose than for any other reason.

Keep it simple, the secret to good design is simplicity. A logo should have clear lines and shapes, simple forms, and solid colors. It must work at a very small size and at low resolution. Your logo needs to appear legibly as a single color on white and a reverse on a black without gradients. You may want your logo to tell the whole story of your business, therefore making it a complicated mix of pictures and text. However, a complex logo gives the eye nothing to lock onto; it gets pulled in several different directions, and the energy is depleted.

Choose your colors wisely. People identify color more quickly than any other design element. They are attracted to or repelled by color more easily than any other element. Think about your intended audience and how they will identify with the colors you choose.  Research color theory to understand the meanings of colors.

To see creative logos that you can draw inspiration from check these websites:
  • LogoSpire - Simple, straightforward logo gallery.
  • LogoPond - Logo gallery where you can browse different styles like modern, edgy, classy, ect.
  • LogoLounge - Check out their "Logos In The News" section.  There are lots of before & after logo designs which I always find helpful to see.
  • Plus, look to websites like Graphic-Exchange and one of my personal favorites, The Dieline, for logo, identity and package design inspiration.
The bottom line is an amateur logo design could hurt your company's credibility and memorability. Being an artist or craftsman doesn't necessarily mean design will come easy. If you don’t trust your design skills, seek to hire a graphic designer whose work you admire and can work within your budget.

Golden Ropes by Jamie Hogsett

These pretty braided earrings have Swarovski 6mm crystal rounds in crystal golden shadow dangling from them, though I'm guessing pretty much any color would look great. They're quick to make too. I made these just in time to take on vacation!

To make your own, you'll need 24K Gold Extreme Soft Flex Wire in .014 diameter, ear wires, and the following gold-filled findings: 3mm crimp tubes, 4mm crimp covers, and head pins. Add your favorite bead(s) as dangles, and you're good to go!

Spotlight on....Designer Patti Beghtol

Our featured designer for this month is Patti Beghtol

Hi there, my name is Patti Beghtol. I've been crafting and creating pretty much my entire life. My philosophy when it comes to creating is if you conceive it, make it. No matter what, if you have an idea to make something, do it. You can decide it doesn't work AFTER you've tried. I also believe in always learning, finding new techniques and new things to try.

Home Shopping Network prefers Soft Flex Beading Wire

January 2010, I had the extreme pleasure of accompanying Soft Flex Owner Mike Sherman to visit Home Shopping Network in Tampa, FL.  It was an awesome experience!

We were specifically invited by the Quality Assurance Team to give an overview of our products and how to best use them for the least breakage.  About a year before, a company that does a fair amount of business with HSN had switched from a competitor's product to our product after they had some embarrassing breakage issues during an onsite inspection. Let's just say, beads went flying and that never looks or feels very good.  It was a joy to hear how many less returns this company was getting after switching to our product.  It showed HSN that our product truly is different from all of the rest.  And this is why they decided to invite us to give 2 seminars for not only the Quality Assurance Team but also buyers, writers and many more.

Between seminars, we got a chance to take a tour of the HSN campus.  We got to see how they test not only jewelry designs but even televisions, clothing, vacuums, etc.  Their quality assurance process is amazing.  They really put a lot of time and energy into making sure that customers get what they pay for and I find that to be very commendable. We also go to great lengths to make sure that our customers get great products and are satisfied, so I felt right at home.  We got to see the call center, which has hundreds and hundreds of employees on the phones but you could practically hear a pin drop.  They are all so quiet and focused.  We even got to see the live cameras in action.  I knew that HSN ran 24 hours a day, but I had never stopped to think about what that meant!  You mean that there is live television taping even at 3 in the morning?  Yes, it is true.  The sets are continuously being built and moved.  Mike and I were in awe.

On February 10th, it became official, HSN prefers Soft Flex Beading Wire. Here is an excerpt from an email that went out to their vendor partners that day.

HSN will require the use of Soft Flex brand beading wire effective for production starting April 1st.  Items covered:
  • All strung items that currently use flexible beading wire
  • All strung items that have gemstone beads and /or metallic elements
  • Any strung item that fails performance testing in our Packaging Laboratory (your QA Evaluator will be in contact with you when this occurs)
Requirements:
  • Soft Flex Beading Wire: 49 strand, 0.024 gauge - If this is too large for the drill hole, please move to the next smaller Soft Flex size
  • Soft Flex Crimps
  • Soft Flex Crimping Pliers
  • Please ensure drill holes are straight and cleaned out before stringin
Benefits:
  • Better strength, durability and product longevity
  • Better flexibility and drape

So, as of April 1st, strung designs that use flexible beading wire created for HSN are strung on Soft Flex Beading Wire!  I think it really speaks volumes about them as a company that they really do care about every piece and part of the finished products that they sell.  But, it also speaks volumes about our product in that after careful analysis, they saw the benefit of asking their vendors to exclusively use our beading wire over all others.

CHA - Craft and Hobby Association Summer 2010

We are packing our bags and our palette and heading to Rosemont, Illinois in less than 2 weeks for the Craft and Hobby Association's Summer show.  We are stoked that we were chosen as 1 of 20 to present a product at the Innovations Media Event.  I was tasked with creating and giving a 1-minute power speech to explain our company and the product that is being highlighted.  After the speeches, Jamie and I will be demonstrating how to knit with beading wire.  After all is said and done, we'll turn over our product to be displayed with honor in the Innovations Showcase for the length of the show.

This year, we decided to offer Make-it-Take-its in our booth from 11am-3pm each day of the show.  It will be a similar project to what we offered at Bead and Button, but I think that Jamie switched up the color palette.  To be honest, I really, really, really enjoyed teaching Make-it-Take-its at Bead and Button, but it is pretty exhausting.  Joshua told me that I was giving instructions in my sleep a few nights after I returned home from Milwaukee. I don't doubt it because I know those instructions as well as I know my own birthday or social security number after repeating them about half a million times over the course of the show.  I think the part that I enjoy most is the look of satisfaction when the project is done and the person realizes that they just made their very own earrings AND that they like them.  That is so fun!

Spotlight on...Color by Margie Deeb - The Intervals of Value

    The Intervals of Value
    by Margie Deeb

I talk a lot about the importance of value in my classes and books. Value refers to the darkness or lightness of a color. Value is the most critical color property in building strong, effective color schemes.

Those who pay value no attention go straight for the lucious, delicious, enchantment of color (how can you fault them, it's so seductive). They forget to consider that the most important principle of making color harmonies work is the darkness and lightness of their colors relative to each other...and knowing how to arrange them.
