End of Summer Necklace by Jamie Hogsett

It's ridiculously difficult to believe that today is the last day of August! That means the pool closes in a week, which sadly indicates the end of summer. It always goes by too quickly. Luckily, it's also always a lot of fun! It's been a crazy busy summer. So crazy, that it's taken me a couple of months to finish this very simple wire-wrapped necklace.

Part of the reason it took so long is I was waiting for the debut of Soft Flex Craft Wire in order to use it for the project. Then, I had to try out several colors before I found something that really worked for me. I had some sterling silver eye pins, just not enough for all the wire wraps, so I needed another wire that would work well with the silver. I could have used Silver Craft Wire, but wanted a bit of a contrast, so... Rose Gold is gorgeous, but it was too "rosy" and delicate for the pendant. Copper was just too much orange. I finally settled on Smokey Quartz in 22-gauge and I love how it looks!

The smokey quartz wire really makes the snail's shell pop in this lovely stoneware pendant from Artbeads.com. Czech pressed-glass 5x4mm rondelles in orange/light blue and wasabi were all that was needed to complement the bright colors and amazing detail of the pendant. I'm especially a fan of the two-tone orange/light blue rondelles. The blue on the beads is very subtle, but just enough to make itself known - so pretty! This necklace is meant to represent summertime, but, luckily,  I'm thinking it will transition itself well into fall too!

Disclaimer: The stoneware pendant, orange/light blue rondelles, wasabi rondelles, sterling silver eye pins, sterling silver jump rings, and sterling silver lobster clasp were gifted to me by Artbeads.com as part of their blogging program. Spotlight on...Sculptural Metal Clay Jewelry by Kate McKinnon

Our featured book this month is
Sculptural Metal Clay Jewelry
by Kate McKinnon

Sculptural Metal Clay Jewelry by Kate McKinnon found its way to my doorstep. Kate is such a unique and thoughtful designer. I've always loved her work and enjoy visiting her booth when we cross paths at a show. She is the perfect cross between modern and whimsical and that makes her work very appealing to me. Her latest book, which includes an instructional dvd, is just as fantastic as I expected it to be. It is very detailed and full of fabulous pictures to illustrate the tips and techniques that are being discussed. Good pictures are just so helpful! As I read the book, I could distinctly hear Kate's voice in it which is not always the case in jewelry making books. If you have any interest in metal clay, this "workshop-in-a-book" is perfect for you!

Spotlight on...Designer Sharon Olivia Marchant

Our featured designer for this month is Sharon Olivia Marchant

"Intricate beadwork telling of life's stories.." My muse comes from nature and encourages me to tell a story with everything I create. My start came from working with antique and vintage jewelry, cameos, and trade and European beads in the early 1980's. I was inspired by the intricate work and would often stare into the depths of an early 20th century bead looking for another universe among the colorful twists and turns. I have been beading for more than 20 wonderful years using inspirations, glimpses of nature's wonders, multiple beading techniques and storylines.

Last week to vote for Beads of Courage and their partners

It is the last week of the August Pepsi Challenge and as it is nearing its end, votes are needed now more than ever. Beads of Courage has maintained the #1 position all month long, but it could easily slip away at the very last moments if everyone does not continue to vote. Also, some of our partner charities aren't quite in the top 10. So be sure to not only vote for Beads of Courage, but all 10 companies listed here. Want to learn more about Beads of Courage, stop by their website. A few minutes of your time can go a long way. Please vote daily right up until th end of the month. Thank you!

Links for a new jewelry maker to get started

Josh and I are hard at work on our newly purchased home. We carefully walk down each aisle at Home Depot and talk about all of the wonderful DIY projects we have ahead of us. We purchased a home built in 1955 and the same owners have lived in it since 1959. As you can probably imagine, 50 years later, there is a lot of work to be done on a limited budget. At any rate, I've been learning about a whole new world of products and tools that I've never used before. It can be quite overwhelming at times. It got me to thinking about how overwhelming bead-land must be for a new jewelry designer. It must be so confusing to find the best type of wire, the right crimps, the right tools, etc. Here are a few of my older posts that I think might be helpful if you are a new designer and looking for guidance.

Heck, they might even be helpful if you are a seasoned (note that I didn't use "old") designer and just want a refresher course.

Brand Consistency by Kristen Fagan

Last month I touched upon the basics for Logo Design so, naturally a discussion about branding comes next.

What is branding and how important is brand consistency?  Branding helps a company reach their audience, build recognition and develop customer relationships. Brand consistency is essential - same elements, same typefaces, same colors, every time. Brands need consistency to thrive and I'm talking about consistency over time, meaning the same image repeated again and again and again and again and again.

Yes, you may get bored but, your brand will be strong. It has been said that a consumer needs to see your message 3 or 4 times before it sticks and they take action.  If you think about all the messages we are bombarded with today getting someone to see your message 3 or 4 times seems almost impossible, now couple that with a changing your design, colors or message frequently and you have just made your task of reaching a consumer and "sticking" in their mind that much more difficult.

Many businesses look no further than a logo when thinking about branding but, it is so much more. Your logo is an important piece of the puzzle that also includes colors, typefaces, packaging, taglines, customer service and product details, all of which combine to create your company’s brand. The same attention devoted to your logo must be given to these other elements as well if a truly effective brand is to be achieved.

So how does this translate to a small business? Carefully choose how you present your business, pay attention to the details and keep it consistent.  It is really very simple, and it is something that businesses of any size can achieve.  At the end of the day, it comes back to one rule: be consistent.

Spotlight on...Color by Margie Deeb - Making Palettes for Focal Beads

Making Palettes for Focal Beads
by Margie Deeb

How to create a necklace color scheme from an existing bead (or fabric) is one of the questions I've been asked the most over the years.
Last week Rachel D. wrote:

"I have a question about working with beads that are multi-colored. I have purchased lampwork glass beads that are made up of at least 3 colors. I would like to know if I should choose 1 color out of the multi-color bead and use as an accent bead or just use plain clear glass beads as accents? I hear different opinions.

I told Rachel "Its difficult for me to give you my most informed answer without seeing the beads."
My preference is color, not clear glass beads. So I would try to choose 1 color within the beads to use as a unifying color. That is not a rule, that is where I would start experimenting.

Floor Beads by Jamie Hogsett

When I worked my first bead show as a Soft Flex Company employee, the girls taught me about floor beads. Floor beads are the beads left over on the show floor after most of the bead companies have packed up their booths and headed home. I just returned from BeadFest Philly where I was moonlighting with Heidi in the Lillypilly Designs booth. We were one of the last booths to finish tearing down and when Heidi left to take a load of our totes back to the hotel (our rental suv was too small to carry it all in one load), I roamed the floor in search of treasure (while keeping watch over the remaining totes, of course). I had close to an hour to look around and found a pretty spectacular stash of orphaned beads.

During the plane ride home yesterday, I looked through the haul and found some groups of things that seemed to work well together, including the beads above. I've never found more than just a dozen or so beads, let alone enough to make an entire project. A necklace had to be made!

Using only floor beads, plus five additional materials for stringing and finishing, this necklace was created. I used Soft Flex Craft Wire in 26 gauge Black to wrap the long red stick pearl, Soft Flex Craft Wire in 20 gauge Black to wrap the other pendant pieces, two gold-filled 2x3mm crimp tubes, four brass crimp covers, and Soft Flex Beading Wire .024 diameter in Black Onyx to string it all. Hmmm, I wonder when I can attend a clothing trade show in the hopes of finding a new outfit to wear with this? Somehow, I doubt "floor clothes" are as plentiful...

Everyday Bracelet using NEW Soft Flex Craft Wire by Jamie Hogsett

As Sara pointed out during set-up at CHA when Lisa and Shelley asked why I wasn't wearing beaded jewelry, I'm not really a beader in real life. My house is filled with beads (they've spilled out of my studio and into pretty much every other room) and all the beaded jewelry I've made for books and magazines during my ten years in this industry, but I really don't wear beads on a daily basis. I always wear the diamond studs and pendant that were gifts from my mom, and sometimes I wear beaded earrings, but other than that, I'm generally bead-free. I'm attempting to change that though. I feel the need to wear something beaded everyday, so I made a bracelet that I really love for just that purpose.

I used new Soft Flex Craft Wire in 18-gauge Gunmetal to wrap all the links. Some links are just wire, some have Crystallized Swarovski Elements 6mm rondelles in Erinite, three links have polymer clay spacer rondelles in colors that I adore made by Heather at Humblebeads, and one link has a pewter fish from my buddies at Green Girl Studios that has always been a favorite design of mine. All the links are finished off with a fun sterling silver cage clasp that is easy to put on by myself and quite secure. Since I don't wear a watch, I plan on wearing this bracelet on my left wrist, which leaves my right wrist available for other beaded bracelets!

Beaded Ring by Social Butterfly Jewellery Design in Melbourne, Australia

Oh, how I love this design!!  In my internet wanderings this week, I came across this stunning ring.  She used .010 Very Fine Soft Touch and was able to knot the wire to finish off the design.  This makes the design far more wearable as it has the strength of stainless steel running through it.  Not only is this design neat, it is always wonderful to see our product being used on the other end of the world.  Designer Melissa (Mel) Ingram is based in Melbourne, Australia. Her design is based off a pattern by US designer May Brisebois. .010 Very Fine Soft Touch comes in satin silver, black and white.

As if the ring wasn't enough, she also posted the above necklace.  She used .024 Heavy 925 Extreme Beading Wire.

Opportunity from Plaid

A message from Plaid:

We, the jewelry team at Plaid, are looking for jewelry crafters who also have a blog for future projects!
We're interested in ALL styles and media, but especially those who focus on beading, stringing, and creating lovelies with all types of charms, chain, and pendants.  If you have experience with creating projects and writing instructions, that's a bonus!  We want people who purchase jewelry supplies at craft stores (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joanns)....but we understand that many of you shop online!  No problem!

We don't have ALL of the specifics of what we're looking for....but here's a quick list of what we "think" we'll be needing:

A group of jewelry crafters that can help us to....
- narrow down our offerings for retail (ex.  sometimes we have a 100 designs, and only need 60...maybe you can help us pick the best 60!)

-text new jewelry products and tools, providing appropriate feedback as to who it functions, needs for improvements, etc!

-make finished jewelry samples from time to time  for meetings, tradeshows, website, and printed publications. (These will need instructions.)

-provide ideas for new trends or new products (if you have them)

-promote our new products online by product giveaways, finished samples/tutorials, and a general "cheerleading" of Plaid jewelry!

-help enhance the jewelry team by offering opinions on ideas, styling, etc.

-spend 2-3 hrs/week (some weeks nothing, some weeks a little more....just depends on cycle)

-answer survey questions we may have

How will it benefit you?

-We're working on a pay scale...is it a monthly fee?  Is it a pay per blog?  etc. TBD, but there will be some sort of payment.

-Free jewelry product for all new programs to play with as you wish (and to use as giveaways for your blog)

-We will publish (on our site/blogs AND for our presentation purposes) our "jewelry panel"...

-We plan to cross-promote blog entries by also mentioning them on our other Plaid blogs (so hopefully, more traffic/exposure for you!)

-Depending on how much we can grow our jewelry department, perhaps tradeshow appearances....

Other ways still being defined....

If any/or all of this interests you at all, please send us your email, your blog, your etsy shop, you facebook, your twitter.... (pretty much all of your information!!!) about yourself and the ways you do social networking.  Don't go to any trouble...it can be very casual!

We are looking to create a small team.  We want the team to be well-rounded....some funky, some more traditional, some in-between.  There's not "perfect fit!"  We're open to everything and everyone.

We are so excited to get this started, and can't wait to hear from you!  When we get info and have a larger group to choose from, we'll begin to narrow down the submissions.  Please know that, unfortunately, we can't choose everyone!   We'll use things such as "Google Rank" and other methods to put together our team....but I know it will be hard because we have such a talented community around us!

Please let me know if you have ANY questions, and I'll be glad to help answer them!!  I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,

Mandy

Margie Deeb's Fall/Winter 2010 Color Report by Jamie Hogsett

Margie Deeb's Fall/Winter 2010 Color Report is available now!
Being a part of Margie's Reports is a fun assignment. I've always loved paint swatches, so I get really excited when the envelope of the upcoming colors arrives from Margie in the mail.
My colors this time around were Golden Glow and Chocolate Truffle. Chocolate - how can I not adore that color?? Plus, even though my skin tone makes it difficult to wear yellow, I've always been a fan. My childhood bedroom was yellow - so sunny!
This necklace was made with Citrine .019 beading wire, CZs, an 18K gold-plated toggle clasp with topaz Austrian crystals and gold-filled head pins, jump rings, crimp tubes, and crimp covers from Soft Flex Company along with Kazuri and Tagua Nut beads from Antelope Beads. It's just one of many gorgeous pieces of jewelry in the information-packed Color Report. It's full of fascinating reading and beautiful color combinations - check it out!

Spotlight on....Rings and Things

Our featured bead store for this month is Rings and Things

Rings and Things, a thriving online bead and jewelry supplies wholesaler, celebrates its 38th year this summer.
Our original store opened in in 1972, in an old downtown Spokane, Washington building that was renovated into a mall run by artists, musicians, crafters and restaurateurs. This store primarily featured hand-crafted sterling silver jewelry from the American Southwest, as well as 70's filigree-and-bead earrings that were made by hand on-site. The owner, Russ Nobbs, previously sold gold-wire name pins and beady earrings at state fairs around the Northwestern United States.

Carnulean Necklace by Andrea Morici for Beadaholique

Very nice! This design was created by Andrea Morici for Beadaholique and uses our Soft Flex Beading Wire in Antique Brass.  I love the combo of dark brown and blue.  Actually, Josh and I are considering a very similar combo for our new living room.  Guess what else I noticed, if you look closely at the product name Beadaholique calls our wire "Soft Flex Best Beading Wire".  I just love that!  I also noticed that they have new handpainted resin charms, new pandora-style metal beads and new stamping blanks.  So if you haven't checked out Beadaholique lately, you should stop by and see all that they have to offer as well as the gorgeous design shown above.

Easy-Peasy Sparkle Earrings by Jamie Hogsett

As a creature of habit and fan of routine, being away from home for two weeks kind of gets to me. Even though I always unpack the second I get home, it usually takes me a few days to get back on track. So, this morning when I realized I didn't have a project for the blog, I knew I needed something that was quick and simple to help ease me back into my routine. A little bit of sparkle always helps with that too...

The earrings were made in under twenty minutes using the Vitality Trios wire set, sterling silver 3-hole spacer bars, sterling silver floret ear wires, sterling silver 3mm crimp tubes, sterling silver 4mm crimp covers, and Crystallized Swarovski Elements 3mm rounds in crystal moonlight. Just 3 or 5 crystals on the wires on both sides of the spacer bar give just the right amount of sparkle to catch the light. These earrings are pretty, fun, and, best of all, easy!
