10 favorite unique findings

Do you find that new components get your creative juices flowing too? I love unique findings. They inspire me to think outside of my comfort zone. It is so easy to fall into a design rut. A really great new finding can stimulate new creativity. Here are 10 favorites from Soft Flex Company. They aren't really listed in a specific order. I think that each one is interesting and contains such huge possibilities.

Just a reminder, all of the following findings are marked at their original sterling silver price from a few years ago. We have not had a price increase on these items. Now that silver pricing is at about $40/oz, these findings are a steal!

Mint Chocolate Swirls by Jamie Hogsett

Mocca is one of my current favorite Swarovski Elements bead colors. It's warm and rich, it goes with many other colors, and it always makes me crave chocolate, so how could it go wrong?! In these shoulder-grazing earrings, Mocca crystals in 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm dangle from lengths of braided Flourite beading wire and sterling silver ear wires, spacer bars, head pins, crimp tubes, and crimp covers. I don't know about you, but the Mocca crystals with the Flourite wire brings to mind one of the best combinations of chocolate and mint ever: Andes Creme de Minth Thins. Yum! Better add these to my grocery list now...

Travels Far and Wide - 12 Years Ago

With Soft Flex Company, I've had such a neat opportunity to travel far and wide. Sometimes it amazes me just how much I have traveled, what I have seen and the wonderful memories that I have collected. I was only 20 when Scott and Mike hired me. In fact, I think I was actually 19 (2 days away from being 20) at my job interview. My first show in the Summer of 1999 was Embellishment (pre-BeadandButton), which I think was in Portland. Mike and Scott have often reminisced about my being so quiet at that first show, which they typically always follow with, "What ever happened to you being so quiet and shy!?" Needless to say, that did not last long. All joking aside, from the beginning, Scott and Mike always encouraged me to not only work hard on work trips but to to really take advantage of my time in new cities: take a tour, try a new food, get out and do something.

Me, Jessica, Amber

The first year was a complete whirlwind. I traveled in a group of three girls and we were gone almost every single weekend. We were all still young enough that we clearly were still girls, not quite women. I don't have many pictures from that year, but lots of great memories.

We visited so many neat places. In Memphis, we went to Graceland. Jessica has an affinity for Elvis, so it was especially meaningful to her. I admit, it was an unforgettable experience.

I remember my first time at the top of the Space Needle. It was freezing cold. I tried to enjoy the view for as long as I possibly could. The view was breath taking.

In Ft. Launderdale, I remember sitting on the beach front avenue eating dinner with Amber. I think that it was one of the first times that I spent a significant amount of time near the beach and the ocean. I was mesmerized.

12 years later, I find it hard to believe that so much time has passed. I'm so thankful that Scott and Mike urged me to live large while I was foot-loose and fancy-free. I travel a lot less now, still a lot by some standards, but a lot less than I did in my 20's. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to travel less! I love to be in my home with Josh and Honey. I love to make dinner in my own kitchen and sleep in my own bed. But, I think that I don't take those things for granted due to the traveling. I also think that the traveling really helped to shape the woman that I am today. Perhaps it is time for a name change: SoftFlexWoman.

Spotlight on... Star's Beads

Star's Beads

"These beads are rabbits; they are multiplying in your basement", joked a neighbor when she saw my basement bead shop in 1992. This was the beginning of Star's Beads housed in the lower level of a house in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. The "shop" was only open on Mondays, and people came from miles to select beads and take beading classes in one of the small bedrooms.

I began collecting beads after taking a pearl knotting class while living and teaching school in Hong Kong. I roamed through the old Jade Market and watched men cutting and carving jade and ivory. I went to China when it was rough traveling to look for antique jade archer's rings and belt buckles.

Affordable Silver Filled Crimp Tubes for Beading

I'm very excited to announce that we now have 2x2mm silver filled crimp tubes. They seem to run at about half the price of sterling silver, but in my testing, they were quite nice! Our silver-filled crimps are similar to gold-filled crimps. Silver and brass are mechanically bonded. Silver-filled crimps are hundreds of times thicker than silver plating and have the same properties as sterling silver crimps.

Soft Flex® Crimp Tubes are crafted with the professional in mind. We have constructed a crimp tube that is almost twice as thick as others on the market. The sturdier build of the crimp is enhanced by the fact that they are also seamless. Finish your next piece securely with our designer crimps.

The 2x2 Soft Flex® Crimp Tube is typically recommended for diameters .014 or .019 in Soft Flex or Soft Touch Wire and should be crimped with the Regular Crimping Pliers.

New Fashion Trends

Have you visited our Fashion Trends section in the School of Design? It is a neat little section that pairs our free project ideas with affordable fashion that is available from Kohl's, Target, etc. Do you ever create a design to wear with a specific outfit? Or, do you work in the reverse and make the design first and then find an outfit to match? Which came first, the chicken or the egg....the design or the outfit?

Spotlight on...Bead Society of Victoria

The BSV was founded in September 1994 by a group of people with a strong interest in the history of beads and the craft of beading. By the time the first newsletter was issued in April 1995, the member list had grown to 15, five of those are still members today.

The official launch of the BSV took place on the 26th March 1995 in conjunction with the opening of the first BSV Exhibition "Beads -The Art of Adornment", at Labassa Historic Mansion, Caulfield North, Victoria, and in September NanC Meinhardt was our first international tutor.

Since then, the BSV has grown from strength to strength. Two presidents have led the BSV through strong growth over 15 years, and we now have almost 400 members. The Society has hosted many exhibitions, international and national tutors and other events over the years.

Moon-Kissed Garden by Jamie Hogsett

This elegant necklace was featured in the Beads 2011 Buyer's Guide special issue magazine that came out earlier this year. I made this necklace months ago and when it came back to me, I hung it up with the rest and completely forgot to blog about it. Luckily, Sara was looking through that magazine yesterday and reminded me. Thanks Sara!

The pendant in this necklace is a beautiful black obsidian piece from Lillypilly Designs. It is complemented with glass rondelles and pearls from my stash, Lucite rounds from The Beadin' Path, and brass beads and findings from Vintaj. Soft Flex Craft Wire in 24-gauge Black and 26-gauge Vintage Bronze were used to connect everything together.

Spotlight on...Stamped Metal Jewelry by Lisa Niven Kelly

Stamped Metal Jewelry
by Lisa Niven Kelly

I have wanted a copy of Stamped Metal Jewelry by Lisa Niven Kelly since it first came out in 2010. At the Bead&Button Show, we had the extreme pleasure of being kitty corner from Beaducation. Fortunately and unfortunately, this meant that I had to walk by each and every time I took a break. Fortunate because I love them. Unfortunate because I could spend a pretty penny in their booth. I broke down on the last day of the show and bought this book as well as some other stamping supplies. The book is full of inspiring design ideas for making your own custom jewelry. She covers a range of techniques, such as: hammering, texturing, cutting, sawing, hole punching, dapping, riveting, oxidizing, polishing, annealing and stamping. Fun!

From the back cover, "Using metal stamps and sterling silver blanks, your jewelry can be personalized with words, textures, and creative designs

Typography Tips by Kristen Fagan

What is typography? Typography is the arrangement of type and the selection of fonts (typefaces), size, line spacing (leading), adjusting the space between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between letters (kerning). Type is made of shapes which influence how the words are to be read, and the emotion they convey, giving every typeface a personality.

Today I would like to share some tips for using type effectively and avoiding common mistakes.

Choosing a font size - It's easy to stick with the default 12 point font size but for printed material, using a smaller font size gives a more professional, modern look. However, anything less then 7 points will likely cause readability issues.

Viewing text on a computer monitor is different than printed material. Type on a screen often appears smaller and less crisp so sticking with 12pt or going slightly larger is good practice for the reading on a monitor.

Mixing too many fonts - Too many fonts on one page can be distracting. You may feel that using a variety of fonts in a document will liven it up or bring attention to it but, usually what happens is the reader becomes overwhelmed, agitated and unclear where the important elements are. Try limit your fonts to two or three at the most.

Using a Serif + San Serif font - There’s nothing wrong with living things up, and one way to do so tastefully is to mix sans serif and serif fonts together. Combining the two mixes an elaborate and sleek font, which balances one another.

Using similar values of color on top of one another - For example, try printing a medium teal blue text on top of a medium purple box. Not only is it unappealing, but it hard to read and looks muddy.using the contrast of light teal blue on medium purple box is much easier to read and looks brighter.

Don't forget about spacing - The key to any document you create is having it be legible. Leaving empty space (whitespace) will add a sophisticated feel to your documents and gives your readers eyes a break. Line spacing (leading) can improve the overall readability of large blocks of text, making it easier on readers to follow lines of text without losing their place.

These are just a few basic typography tips to make your documents a little more attractive, easy to read and professional.

Want to know more and get a better understanding of typography? Here are some resources to check out: “Basic Typography: A Design Manual” by James Craig, “Complete Manual of Typography” by James Felici and The film Helvetica is a great documentary to watch and help you better understand type.

Spotlight on... Xses Handmade Jewelry by Christin "LeXi" Davies

Xses Handmade Jewelry
by Christin "LeXi" Davies

I began altering my jewelry as a teenager in the mid-eighties. I was a fan of Madonna and I would try to make jewelry that was like hers, but using the parts from store bought jewelry and what I could scavenge from garage sales with my babysitting money.

Years later, I was happily making altered art; but I fell into beading by accident in 2000. Testing out some a permanent alcohol based stamping ink, I was looking for new ways to use the ink that would go beyond paper stamping. While shopping at Dayton's Department Store, I saw some bracelets made with Mah Jong tiles and found my inspiration. Using the ink I stamped images onto the back sides of dominos and used them in collage art pieces. I still wanted to make these more than just art to hang on a wall and decided I could drill the dominos and make them into beads. A friend of mine worked at a local bead shop so I went to her for help, and she was kind enough to teach me how to bead.

Everyday Bracelets eMag

I had the extreme honor of participating in the expert section of the first issue of Everyday Bracelets eMag. I will admit that video taping myself to answer a question was challenging, to say the least. First, I felt as if I was talking to myself. Second, I think that we are all our own worst critics. I am not an exception to that rule. But, in the end, I think it turned out just fine. This eMag on a whole is done really well and includes 14 bracelet ideas, 10 must have supplies, and a QandA with experts (that's me). I hope that you will buy a copy and enjoy!

Tidying Up Earrings by Jamie Hogsett

Organizing my office is my never-ending battle. I'm horrible when it comes to cleaning up my workspace before starting a new project, so my desk is pretty much always a mess. I'm really trying to remedy that this summer though, so I began a huge cleaning sweep (again).

I came across all of the components in these earrings when cleaning off a beading mat. Some rainbow agate coins leftover from last week's project jumped out at me, along with some green CZs, and ear wires, hammered rings, and daisy spacers from Tierra Cast. I love the look of the black and silver metals together! I guess the lesson learned here is sometimes cleaning can be fun.

Spotlight on....The Magic of the Analogous-Complementary Combo by Margie Deeb

The Magic of the Analogous-Complementary Combo
by Margie Deeb

Something happens when you pair the enchantment of adjacent colors with the gusto of complements... something rousing and vigorous, coursing with life. This "something" is technically called the analogous complementary scheme. But what really happens is magic.

Begin this magic by choosing an analogous group of two or three colors adjacent to each other on the wheel - okay, four if you must! This group becomes the dominant color force.

The Hottest Metals in Jewelry Right Now
by Charlene Gary

I'm a metal girl. I like working with metal, playing with metal, melting metal or just making it turn colors. Silver is my favorite, as gold has been just too expensive. The price of silver has seen a 200% jump in the last couple years, and with precious metals at an all time high, what's a girl to do?

Winner Announced

An Arizona Sunset

Here in Arizona, we've been waiting for the rain to come. It's been a little cloudy and humid over the past few days. Last night, I let Honey out into the backyard and noted that it seemed awfully still out there. No wind. Shoot, no rain. About 5 minutes later, Honey started to bark at the back door. Nothing unusual about that! When I opened the door to let her in, a huge gush of dusty wind rushed at me. What?! Yep, a dust storm. Poor Honey was panic stricken. It is unbelievable how fast those storms move! We did end up getting a little rain though, woo hoo! This morning, the entire city is covered in a fine layer of dust.

So, we have a winner!!!! Lucid Moon Studio, you are our big winner this month. Please contact me to claim your prize. You should check out her lovely blog. She won 2 strands of chain and a hole punch tool. Yay! The next giveaway will post on August 5th. Stay Tuned!
