Kumihimo + Extreme Beading Wire = Magic

Every year Soft Flex Company helps sponsor the booth for the International Society of Glass Beadmakers (ISGB) at the Bead and Button Show. Usually they extend us a little space to do a fun show giveaway. This year, we decided to collaborate. ISGB sent me a gorgeous bead made by Kris Schaible. In return, I created a finished design with the bead. The necklace will be displayed in the ISGB booth at Bead and Button and this will be the item that some lucky person will win this year in the giveaway.

I knew that I wanted to create a cording that was larger to work well with the large bead. I also have been wanting to test out adding beads to my kumihimo designs. This was a perfect opportunity. I skimmed through the book Kumihimo Jewelry Simplified and found some very helpful tips for using beads in a kumihimo design. This gave me a general idea of how many beads to string onto each wire to start and also showed me exactly when and how to add them into the woven design. I chose to our Extreme Sterling Silver 925 as it complimented the silver on the bead. Again, as mentioned before on this blog, you can use the spools as bobbins. It works great!

I am really pleased with how this turned out and I hope that whoever wins it will love it as much as I do! It has a retail value of $400!!!

One last, but important, point: this is a perfect project for the new double density kumihimo board. It is thicker and stronger so it works very well with a heavy project or one with wire. In this case, the design was both heavy and wire based.
